These Capital Improvement Projects were made possible by the Alabama Legislature restoring funds to the State Park Budget.  This page is intended to keep the public informed on what we are doing with these funds and what facilities will be temporarily closed during construction.

Joe Wheeler State Park's New Marina Shelter-Completed

Joe Wheeler used capital improvement funds/grant monies/donations to construct a new shelter at the Marina.  A grant was obtained through Lauderdale County Development Commission by State Representative Lynn Greer.  Wheeler Yacht Club also provided funds toward the construction.  DCNR Engineering designed the structure, and Joe Wheeler's Maintenance Crew built the shelter.  It will be used by our boater and for marina events.  Shelter will also be available to rent by groups staying at the hotel.

Project Started 03/2014 and ended 04/10/2014

This cabin now has new ceiling, hardwood floors, new wall paneling, new countertops, new appliances, new furniture, and new central heat and air. All work completed by Joe Wheeler's Maintenance Crew.

Project Started 01/2014 and Completed 02/13/2014.

Joe Wheeler Campground Bathhouse A/C Installation - In Progress

The bathhouses in our campground were not climate controlled in the summer. We didn't have any air conditioning in these bathhouses which caused them to be quite uncomfortable.  We've installed AC units in 2 of the 3 bathhouses, with the final bathhouse to be completed soon. Mini-Split heat pumps/AC units were selected because they are very energy efficient and remove humidity from the bathhouse, providing more guest comfort.

Start Date 03/2014
Expected Completion - 06/2014

Joe Wheeler State Park Lodge River Room- In Progress

Joe Wheeler Marina New Windows - Complete

Some of the windows at the Marina suffered termite damage a few years ago.  Since funding was restored, we were able to address this problem.  We replaced these windows with aluminum store front windows.  It really makes our Marina store look better, and it's more energy efficient. We plan on doing the rest of the windows next year.

Expected Start Date - 05/01/2014
Completed - 05/19/2014

Joe Wheeler Golf Course Greens Renovation- In Progress

One of the major complaints at our golf course has been the greens and cart paths.  We finished the cart paths last year with grant monies and this summer we will renovate the green with new grass and drainage.  Over the years, the Bermuda grass has mutated and greens became less desirable to play.  We want to fix this for our park visitors using these capital improvement funds.

Joe Wheeler Lodge Dog Friendly Hotel Rooms and Cottage - Completed

We understand that things changes and so do policies.  We have in the past prohibited dogs from staying in our overnight facilities. However, we recently created dog friendly cabins for our guests with well-behaved dogs.  The next step is to create 5 dog friendly hotel rooms and a dog friendly cottage.  The hotel rooms will have luxury vinyl flooring with pet stations nearby.  Cottages have wood floors and will have stain resistant furniture with a pet station at cottage. Pet fee will apply.
