The BTC is proud to present the 2015 edition of Adam's Heart Runs. Now one of the BTC's premiere races, participants have the opportunity to race either a 5k, 10k, or 10 mile distance.

The event will be held on February 7, 2015 at Oak Mountain State Park. All races are held entirely on paved roads. This is not a trail race. The race begins and ends near the Dogwood Pavilion.

Oak Mountain's Customer Appreciation Open House & RV Show

Come join us for our Customer Appreciation Open House and RV Show in beautiful Oak Mountain State Park's campground.


Open House activities will be taking place from 10a.m. until 2p.m. on Saturday, February 7th and RV Show will be all day Saturday, the 7th and Sunday, the 8th.

Join staff & volunteers for a fun day of hiking thought-out the park to see some of DeSoto’s waterfalls, big & small. See Lost Falls, Laurel Falls, Indian Falls, Lodge Falls, even more water features like Laurel Creek & the West Fork of Little River. Enjoy the scenery of DeSoto State Park while burning some calories at the same time!  Moderate Terrain over 5 miles.

Focus on Nature Photography Weekend

Join fellow photographers at the Joe Wheeler State Park’s “Focus on Nature”, a nature photography weekend.  We have put together a series of photography workshops and field trips designed to get you to great photo opportunities in great places with our great naturalist and photographers’ instruction.  There are so many “greats” in just three days!  Don’t know how to work your camera? Who cares?!? We offer seminars suitable for beginners, as well as seminars for the more experienced photographer that is anxious to learn new tricks and ideas.  There is even a seminar on photo editing!

March 21, 2015 - 10a.m. – Birds of Alabama – Come out to the Treetop Nature Trail to learn about the local birds. Alabama is home to many species of birds, as well as numerous migratory species.


Historic Selma Pilgrimage

Visit one of Alabama's oldest towns to see sites rarely open to the public. Guides dessed in period costumes lead tours through homes,museums and more in the states's largest historic distric. Experience hands-on history tours through a post-Civil War foundry, an 1861 Gristmill, art shows and unique Selma products.

Basic Pine Needle Basketry Class

Learn the basics of pine needle basketry, an old craft with a long history.

Join DeSoto State Park Naturalist Brittney Hughes to learn the basic steps to making a coiled basket from longleaf pine needles. Each participant will learn the basic skills of pine needle basketry and take home their very own creation.

Oak Mountain 50K

Saturday, March 28, 2015 - 7:30am to 5:00pm

The 16th Annual Oak Mountain 50K will take place on March 28th, 2015 starting at the Dogwood Pavilion on Terrace Drive.

The Oak Mountain 50K course runs through forested hills on mostly single track trail with two climbs up to the top of Double Oak Mountain (elevation gain ~600 ft). There are no repeating loops.

Spring Break Nature Activities

March 28th – Lake Trail Hike – Meet the Naturalist at the Marina on Terrace Drive at 9:30a.m. for a walk around the lake. Dress accordingly and bring water. The terrain is gently rolling. Well behaved dogs on leashes are welcome.

March 30th – Meet the Animals – Come out to the Petting Farm at 10a.m. to meet the animals of Oak Mountain’s Petting Farm.   

April 1st – Camouflage – Meet the Naturalist at 10a.m. at the stairs to Treetop Nature Trail to learn about camouflage.

April 4, 2015 - 10a.m. to 2p.m. – 8th Annual Easter Egg Hunt – 10,000 eggs will be placed out for kids to hunt for. Join us for this annual tradition. Children 5 & under hunt at 11a.m., children 6 & over hunt at 1p.m. Facepainting, cake hop, hayrides, and more will be going on from 10a.m. until 2p.m. Park admission does apply. Some activities cost $1 each. Egg hunts are free.

June 6, 2015 - 9:30a.m. – National Trails Day Hike – The 1st Saturday of June every year is National Trails Day. National Trails Day is a celebration of America’s wonderful trail systems. Come out and join the Naturalist for a hike on one of the many trails at Oak Mountain State Park. Meet at the Treetop Nature Trail entrance. We will hike along a connector trail to the Yellow Trail and make our way back. The trail is moderately rolling in terrain. Dress accordingly and bring water.

October 17, 2015 - 9:30a.m. – Camp Tranquility Nature Hike – Meet the Naturalist at the entrance to Group Camp Road (on the right just past the Golf Course on John Findley Drive). We will walk to Camp Tranquility with several stops along the way to look at things we find in nature. The walk will be about 3 miles round trip. There will be a climb in elevation. Please dress accordingly and bring water.


Spookapalooza! at DeSoto State Park
