March 22nd, 2014

The 2014 Extreme 5k coincides with the 75th Anniversary of Alabama State Parks.

Part of Alabama State Park's Mission is to operate and maintain recreational facilities; and to extend the public's knowledge of the state's natural environment.  We want to continue this mission and provide the public with access to our natural resources. Therefore, we started an annual Extreme 5K Race called "Running Buck Wild". The name stems from the abundant wildlife at Joe Wheeler State Park such as the Whitetail Deer.  This 5K will take runners across different terrains such as hiking trails, asphalt, and gravel roads.  The race will start in the picnic area at Shelter 1, go through hiking trails, through the campground, around more trails, and back to the picnic area to finish.  In some areas, runners will run along side the great Tennessee River.  Runners will be sure to enjoy the natural beauty of Joe Wheeler State Park.

Our first Extreme 5k was in March 2013.  We had nearly 150 participants, and we expect even more this year.

**2013 Race Funds: We raised enough funds to add several BBQ Grills for our picnic area and update our beach with new sand and sod.  We will continue to use the funds generated from this event to improve Joe Wheeler State Park.
