Fishing Tournaments at Lake Guntersville State Park
2012 Schedule of Fishing Tournaments

Fishing tournaments on Lake Guntersville State Park   Lake Guntersville State Park is a popular place for fishing tournaments.

Lake Guntersville State Park is nestled along the banks of the 69,000-acre Guntersville Reservoir. The park offers perfect fishing opportunities year-round with overnight accommodations ranging from lakeside camp sites and cottages, to mountain-top chalets and hotel rooms. The lake is popular for fishing tournaments, family outings, and the individual avid fisherman and woman. Whether fly fishing from the shallow banks or taking to a boat and scouting out a private cubby hole, you will find fishing from Lake Guntersville to be both a relaxing and rewarding experience.

The sport fisherman will enjoy the wide variety of fish found in this body of water all four seasons. White bass thrive in the tributary streams and are the main attraction in the months of February and March. Largemouth bass and crappie become the dominant fishes during the months of April, May, and June. Mayflies begin hatching during June luring bluegills to appear in creels until August. Sauger fishing is good at the head of the lake during the fall and winter months.

Crappie is the top ranking sport fish and it accounts for more than half of the catch from these waters. It, along with Bass, can be harvested in the fall season from the deeper waters. Bass find casting and spinning lures attractive while Bluegills go for worms and crickets used on the lake bottom. Popping bugs and a fly rod are usually successful in luring Bass and Bluegill. Fishing for White Bass is most exciting during the month of June when Mayflies are hatching.

Fishing licenses are available in the park at our Town Creek Fishing Center and in Guntersville at the Wal-Mart retail store. Fees vary depending on length of permit and residency. Children age 15 and younger fish for free and do not require a license or permit.
