Lake Lurleen Hosts Triathlon
A triathlon held in memory of the late Alec Wheeler, a dedicated trail-building volunteer at Lake Lurleen State Park, will be held at the park on August 25, 2012. Alec’s hard work and dedication were driving forces that made the current trail system at the park possible.
This event consists of a 1/2-mile swim, 13.1-mile mountain bike trail ride, and a 3.1-mile trail run.
There will be no race-day registration. Register online at www.about-time-events.com, or Contact Mike Higgins at firstname.lastname@example.org. Contact information can also be found at Velocity Bike Shop, 2318 4th St., Tuscaloosa, Ala. The park will open to participants at 6 a.m. with the race beginning at 7 a.m.
In addition to the event registration fee, a park entrance fee of $3 will be required. Pre-paid entrance tickets may be purchased ahead of time at Velocity Bike Shop. This will facilitate quicker entrance to the park.

Mountain Bikers Expand Chewacla Trail System
A non-profit group of mountain bikers, the Central Alabama Mountain Pedalers (CAMP), are busy expanding and renovating the trails at Chewacla State Park in Auburn. Since 2011, CAMP has built 15 miles of new trails in the park. The group also plans to renovate and improve other Chewacla facilities.
The trails are a mix of new sections and expansions of existing trails including some original Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) trails. According to CAMP president Mack Story, the new trails were developed with notable historic points of interest and natural beauty in mind.
“A primary goal of CAMP is to help bring the park back to life as a thriving facility that offers many different opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors,” Story said. More
