Family Fun Day at the Pocket
Buck’s Pocket State Park will host Family Fun Day on October 27, 2012, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Activities will include live music, food and games for the kids hosted by your friends of the Pocket. We will be accepting donations for new playground equipment. Come join us for some great entertainment free of charge for the entire family. Stay overnight in our campground. Frank Jackson Scarecrows
They’re back! Frank Jackson State Park near Opp, Ala., will host Scarecrows in the Park during the months of October and November. The event is sponsored by the Lake Frank Jackson Trailmasters. Creatively made scarecrows by individuals, businesses and school groups will be on display throughout the park. This annual event is fun for all ages. Civilian Conservation Corps in Alabama
Bob Pasquill, Alabama’s devoted historian of the Civilian Conservation Corps, will present the continuing legacy of Alabama’s CCC boys during a program at DeSoto State Park on November 3, 2012. The Civilian Conservation Corps in Alabama: A Great and Lasting Good is the title of Pasquill’s book, which covers the 100 plus camps in Alabama between 1933 and 1942, including the work projects on the first state parks in Alabama.
This program is a must to attend if you are interested in the Great Depression and history of the CCC. Join us Saturday, November 3, 2012 at 7 p.m. at the DeSoto State Park Lodge located at 1299 Blalock Drive NE in Fort Payne, Ala. This event is free and open to the public. Signed books will be available, but you are welcome to bring your own copy to sign as well.

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at the location. Meet at DeSoto State Park’s Nature Center (next door to the Country Store) on Saturday, October 27 at 2 p.m. Free and open to the public. Rickwood Caverns State Park will host a hunter education class on November 5, 6 and 8. Alabama’s hunter education program helps keep hunting safe and enjoyable. The program covers the skills, regulations and responsibilities of hunting and wildlife conservation that help to secure our hunting heritage. If you were born on or after August 1, 1977, you must complete an approved hunter education program before being eligible to hunt.

There’s still time to enter the 2013 Outdoor Alabama Photo Contest. You may enter up to 10 photos in eight different categories, one of which is Alabama State Parks. There’s even a special category for youth photographers. Winners’ photos will be published in the February 2013 issue of Outdoor Alabama magazine. Deadline for entry is October 31, 2012.
