Youth deer hunts are scheduled statewide on the Saturday before the opening of gun deer season. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries allows youth who have not yet reached their 16th birthday to participate in these special hunts. Each youth must be accompanied by an adult (at least 25 years old or a parent). Only one child per adult is allowed, and both must wear hunter orange. The adult must have a proper hunting license, but only the youth may hunt. The youth is allowed to take one deer, except a spotted fawn.
In past years, the hunts were held only on Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). But, this year they are allowed in any hunting area.
