Controlled Burn at Gulf State Park Planned for June 9-10

The Alabama State Parks Division of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, in cooperation with the Alabama Forestry Commission, is planning another prescribed burn on June 9-10, 2005, if weather permits. The burn will take place adjacent to the campground and in an area northwest of the campground adjacent to the cities of Orange Beach and Gulf Shores.

The fuel load within the park has been reduced significantly by a series of burns this past winter. The Division feels that the further elimination of fuel rendered by Hurricane Ivan will create a safer environment in regard to wildfire within the park and outlying communities. This burn will cover approximately 455 acres and create a major safety corridor between the park and its neighbors.

Every effort will be made to ensure safety and proper smoke management during this period.
