Holiday Gift Suggestions for the Outdoors Person

Looking for that perfect gift for the outdoors person on your list? The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has a few ideas to make your holiday shopping a little easier.

A gift sure to be appreciated is a lifetime hunting or fishing license. Lifetime licenses are available to Alabama residents starting at $150 for freshwater fishing, $250 for saltwater fishing and $300 for hunting. Various combination licenses are also available. Call 334-242-3832 for an application; or easier still, order online with a credit card.

A subscription to Outdoor Alabama magazine, the official publication of the Department of Conservation, will remind someone of your generosity year round. For only $8, this gift is delivered five times per year and includes a calendar issue. Two-year subscriptions are available for $14 and three years for $20. The magazine brings you the best of Alabama’s wildlife, natural diversity, outdoor adventure and scenic beauty. Subscriptions may be purchased by calling 866-339-0508 or by clicking here.

Visit the Outdoor Alabama Nature Shop online for a variety of gift items with an outdoors theme. Among the selections currently offered are hats, t-shirts and polo shirts embroidered with the Outdoor Alabama logo. Also available are Christmas ornaments; a 2005 commemorative turkey box call; wildlife pins of fine pewter, hand-poured and finished in a 20-step process; plush Audubon birds that sing; and several different books.

Encourage a wife, sister, daughter, mother, or girlfriend to discover outside activities. Give her a gift certificate for a Becoming an Outdoors Woman weekend workshop. The workshops are held the first weekends of March and October each year and are currently $195 for the weekend, which includes meals and lodging. For many women, this has been the incentive they have needed to discover the exciting experiences of outdoor activities. Call 800-262-3151 for information about the Becoming an Outdoors Woman program and to arrange for a gift certificate.

Alabama’s State Parks offer special lodging packages that make excellent gifts for singles, couples, or families. Call 1-800-ALA-PARK or 334-242-3154 to find out what is available and to make reservations.

Huge selections of gift items are also available from sporting goods stores for hunters and anglers. The Conservation Department emphasizes items that promote safety – hunter orange caps and vests; safety straps and harnesses to use when hunting from tree stands; and flashlights that not only light the way through the woods but also indicate the hunter’s presence to others. Many other items contribute to a hunter’s comfort and convenience, from hand warmers to cushioned seats to packs or bags for carrying necessary gear. The same stores usually carry a large selection of supplies for anglers – rods, reels, nets, lures, tackle boxes, and everything else needed for all kinds of fishing. Be sure to check out all the new styles of life jackets, which are not only comfortable, but save lives.
