Controlled Burn Planned For Gulf State Park

The Alabama State Parks Division is planning a controlled burn on 74 acres of Gulf State Park property adjacent to the north and east property lines. This property joins the City of Orange Beach on its southern border. On February 12, 2004 (weather permitting), the Parks Division will be conducting this burn. Every effort is being made to insure safety and proper smoke management during this burn period. Prior to the burn, the burn team will have obtained approved burn permits from the Alabama Forestry Commission and the Orange Beach Fire Department.

As land managers, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources wishes to achieve several objectives relating to the burn. Historically, the plants and animals which live in these areas were dependent on fire for survival. Two key species – the long leaf pine and the pitcher plant – will be aided by this burn. Burning improves wildlife habitat, stimulates ground cover and reduces wildfire hazards along with many other positive benefits.
