Regional Archery Qualifying Event Held at Good Hope High School

March 24, 2010

Approximately 600 students from 27 schools competed on March 10-11, 2010 at Good Hope High School to earn a berth to the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) state championship. This was the third of four regional qualifying events held in Alabama before the state championship at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Center on April 22, 2010. Approximately 1,100 young archers in Grades 4-12 from schools across will compete at the state event in April.

Scoring for the regional qualifying event was based on Olympic style, target archery in three divisions – elementary, middle and high school. Competition included team and individual levels. First place individual and team winners from each of the four regional qualifying events earn an automatic berth to the state championship. Eligibility to participate in the state championship for all other teams will be based on the overall score within their division after all regional event scores are compiled. The upcoming state championship is the first in Alabama in which all teams and individuals will have earned a berth to compete.

The NASP is a joint venture between the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ (ADCNR) Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division and the Alabama Department of Education. The program promotes participation in the lifelong sport of archery as part of a school’s physical education course and after-school programs. Approximately 175 Alabama schools take part in the NASP. The program can also be included as a unit or activity in the Lifelong Individualized Fitness Education (LIFE) course included in the Alabama Course of Study; Physical Education, which is the one-credit physical education requirement for graduation. The goal of the LIFE course is for students to make physical activity a part of their lives beyond high school, and archery is a sport that can be enjoyed in adulthood.
