Serious Skills Series: Seed Bead Looming Demo
Hosted by DeSoto State Park. The Serious Skills series is a variety of classes and workshops that provide opportunities to discover a hidden talent or learn a new skill for personal enrichment. Classes are open to local residents, overnight guests and park visitors.
This historic form of beaded artwork Native American beadwork, like quill work before it, is a decorative art form. Bead weaving is sacred to many cultures all over the world. In North America, seed beads were introduced to the American Indians through trade in the mid 1800s. Before seed beads were traded, the First People’s used shell, pearl, bone, teeth, stone, etc. The materials that were used depended on the location of each group, with different tribes used different colors and patterns. Local artist Mariah Clough will demonstrate seed bead looming and have several finished pieces on display.
