We are allowing camping guests to reserve sites in the Upper Improved Campgrounds during improvement phase from April 19 - April 29, 2019. This area is STILL under renovation, but Hurst Construction kindly agreed to stop work and allow a “soft opening” for Talladega Race Week and Weekend. We’ve made every attempt to let our guests know that the Upper Campground is only 75% complete. We still need to pave, adjust sites, add the picnic tables and fire pits (ordered but not received yet), and polish up the facility. We know that so many of you plan to camp at Cheaha during this week every year and we did not want to turn you away from your park. We love your “heart-to-park” connection with Cheaha. Please be patient and lenient with issues you may encounter and please share your thoughts and input with us; your experiences and knowledge can assist us with the last 25% of this project. We want this park to be what you want it to be! When you complete your end of stay survey, please rate us and comment with this in mind. Hurst Construction will be back to work on Monday April 29 and we hope to have our GRAND OPENING of the campgrounds at the end of May or first of June.
Because you voted yes on Amendment 2, we are able to implement several park facilities improvement projects. Currently, the Lower Improved Campground is complete and OPEN! Hurst Construction has begun work on the Upper Improved Campground and reservations made for the upper campground will be relocated to the lower campground during this process. By May (we hope!) the park will have two remodeled Improved Campgrounds for you to enjoy. if you have any questions please call (256) 488-5115.
UPPER CAMPGROUND WILL NOT HAVE PICNIC TABLES OR FIRE PITS UNTIL THE END OF MAY-WE HAVE ORDERED BRAND NEW AMENITIES FOR THESE SITES AND THEY ARE BEING MANUFACTURED.

IMPROVEMENTS TO CHEAHA CAMPGROUNDS (NEWS):
Visitors to Cheaha State Park will soon see the completion of ongoing renovation to the campgrounds that will result in an almost brand new experience for campers at our state’s highest point. Paving of both upper and lower campgrounds will involve reshaping the pads, outlining the pads with new timbers and gravel and the milling and paving of campground roads. “This $1.1 million project is the culmination of several projects at Cheaha State Park,” said Greg Lein, Director of the Alabama State Parks System. “We have completed the smaller projects and this final paving work comes after we’ve been able to build up the necessary funds for larger jobs.
“We have been working with a funding schedule where we can undertake one of these bigger renovations every other year. This allows us the funds to keep up with the smaller projects.” Tim Haney, Operations Supervisor for the North Region of the Alabama State Parks System, said several less-noticeable projects have been completed over the past two years at Cheaha. “Many of the improvements were infrastructure projects that visitors would not see,” he said. “We installed all new sewage grinder pumps throughout the park, upgraded components of water system, replaced numerous 30-year-old heating and air units, replaced mattresses and bedding, replaced water heaters, replaced kitchen equipment, refurbished the pool and installed new roofs on most of the facilities.” Cheaha also installed 50-amp service to the campsites and upgraded water lines, and in 2014, demolished the old bathhouses and built new ones. “Two years ago, we built a new shelter over our 9-foot-tall carved ‘Big Foot’ statue. Our staff is using this shelter for environmental education,” Haney said. “We recently dedicated the Mike Bosarge Memorial Dog Park in that same area, thanks to the funds donated by the Bosarge family.
“Cheaha is a gem that is filled with natural beauty. Our staff strives to upgrade the facilities for guests to use as a hub as they enjoy the area.”
CAMPERS WILL STILL HAVE CAMPING OPTIONS AT CHEAHA STATE PARK DURING THESE IMPROVEMENTS. THE UPPER CAMPGROUND WILL BE OPEN WHILE THE LOWER (LAKE) CAMPGROUND CONSTRUCTION IS IN PROGRESS (JANUARY -FEBRUARY). IN MARCH, THE LOWER IMPROVED CAMPGROUND WILL REOPEN AND THE UPPER CAMPGROUND WILL TEMPORARILY CLOSE FOR IMPROVEMENTS. WE HOPE BOTH WILL BE COMPLETE BY THE END OF APRIL.
