The division strives to provide and maintain high-quality facilities and services to meet the needs of visitors; to provide opportunities for personal growth and development of individuals through outdoor experiences; to promote the use of state park facilities; to preserve unique natural features and the integrity of the state parks for future generations; and to promote good will and enhance the public image of the Alabama State Parks through dedicated, courteous employees.

Merit Positions

Many State Parks positions are filled through the State Personnel Department and fall under the merit system. The merit system is based on competitive selection, following the principle that positions are filled on an equal opportunity basis. Permanent jobs with the State are filled by appointment from eligible lists made up of people who have successfully passed an examination, or have met the minimum requirements for a training and experience evaluation. Salaried or merit positions are filled by selecting an employee from an employment register established by the Alabama State Personnel Department. When vacancies in a particular job classification occur, Alabama State Parks requests an employment classification register from the Alabama State Personnel Department. Employment classification registers are either opened periodically or are continuously open. Applications for continuous registers are accepted at any time and you may request to be notified when registers that are not currently open begin accepting applications. Applications and additional information on the state hiring process may be found at www.personnel.alabama.gov. Another resource for completing the application process is this applicant checklist.

Non-merit jobs may be offered at individual parks and offices. Hourly employees are hired at each park by the park staff. The rate of pay is determined by the type work performed. Most hourly employment is seasonal. There are some full-time hourly positions that may offer paid insurance and retirement after one year of employment. Applications are available in park offices. Contact individual parks for more information.
