Discover the world of Chewacla State Park’s rocks and how they formed!
Uncover the fascinating world of rocks and the geological history at Chewacla State Park! Dr. Mark Steltenpohl, co-author of Roadside Geology of Alabama, and Dr. Bill Deutsch, author of Ancient Life in Alabama and the creator of the GeoAlabama Bandana, will guide participants through the geology of the park and introduce the physiographic provinces that make Alabama’s landscape geologically diverse and Chewacla so unique.
During this program, we’ll learn how to use the GeoAlabama Bandana as a visual guide to explore Alabama’s physiographic provinces. Participants will also have the opportunity to examine rock samples from Chewacla State Park and discover more about the fall line, an important geological boundary in Alabama. After, we will take a hike together as we get a geological overview of the park to help connect what we’ve learned to the landscape of Chewacla. This program will begin at the Upper Pavilion near the Event Center at 10 AM and should conclude around noon.
Please wear closed-toed shoes and bring water! Also note, this hike will have periods of steep incline.
