Living with Black Bears in Alabama

Presented by Landon Johnson, AL DCNR-Wildlife & Freshwater Fisheries

Interested in learning more about black bears in Alabama? Come join us!

Did you know black bears can be encountered throughout most of Alabama? Historically, black bears were found statewide, but as suitable habitat began to dwindle over the years, bear numbers declined drastically, leaving only small, isolated populations across only a handful of counties. As population levels became critically low, the black bear was listed as a state-protected species to help recover the species in Alabama. Today, black bears are returning throughout most of their historic range in Alabama, serving as a testament to the power of conservation efforts.

Be sure to visit BearWise.org for additional resources on responsible bear coexistence and what to do in case of an encounter.
