Owl Prowl Night Hike

Have you ever heard an owl calling in the dead of night and been curious? How do they hunt? How do they see? Why do people associate them with wisdom? Join our Park Naturalist for an evening hike to answer these questions and more!

Owls are mysterious creatures to many, as we do not often see them, and only hear them calling at night outside of our homes. We will keep our eyes and ears open and hopefully catch a glimpse or hear one of the many owls that call Joe Wheeler State Park home, as well as possibly other nocturnal creatures that might be out in the dark!

This program is open to all ages and will start at the Champion Trail at 7:30 pm and end in the food plot area as we call for Barred Owls. No advanced reservations are necessary. Visitors should bring a flashlight as this program will take place after dark. Flashlights should have a red light mode, or the light should be covered with red cellophane in order to preserve visitors and wildlife’s night vision. If you do not have red cellophane, the park will have some for you. Please wear comfortable shoes as we will be walking approximately 1.2 miles. Please bring water and wear weather appropriate clothing. Pets are not permitted on this walk.

Where: Champion Trail

When: 7:30 pm

What to Bring: Flashlight with red light mode or red cellophane to cover light (If you do not have red cellophane, the park will supply it for you), appropriate shoes and clothes, water (if needed), camera (optional)
