Campfire Talk: Glade Plants



Although Cheaha Mountain is a small mountain there is a sea of life covering it. Quartzite is one of the hardest rocks in the area. Cheaha Mountain is made of this tough rock. There are barren areas of bedrock at or near the surface, and where soils are so thin, trees and shrubs find it difficult to grow. It is here in the harsh environment of the glade that you will discover rare and unique plant communities. Park Naturalist Mandy Pearson will be stationed outside the Mountain Store to answer any questions you might have about animals, plant, history, or point you to a great hiking trail. Eco Explores: Nature Journaling

Nature journals have been used for many years! Explores crossing this land first documented plant, animals, mountains, and rushing rivers in nature journals. Many adventures have been preserved in these precious journals, but a nature journal is so much more. As you look closer to nature, the plant, the animals, a soft blowing wing a babbling brook, warm sunshine, and the glisten of the evening stars, you begin to see the world in a and special way. Slow down and soak in the spectacular treasures and beauty of the natural world all around us. We will develop descriptive techniques, poetry, watercolors, sketching, and nature observations. Un-Natural Trail Activity & Challenge

Campfire Talk: A Step in Time: Storytelling through Quilts

The history of American quilts tells the history of America. Scrapes of fabric were saved and loving stitched together not just for warmth, but to preserve a story. Imagine if these old quilts could talk, what tales they could tell us! We will discuss many types of quilts, what they mean, and how they have changed through time. Early Bird: Coffee and Bird Watching with the Naturalist

Join the Park Naturalist to watch and identify birds. She will teach you about birding, and how hone in you bird identifying skills. Bring your own set of binoculars and learn about our feathered friends. You are also welcome to chat and ask the naturalist any question about the animals, plants, or park that you have been curious about. A Step In Time: CCC the Men Who Built Cheaha

The Civilian Conservation Corps was an origination of young men committed to conservation across the nation. Parks were built, roads were cut, fires were put out and a nation was shaped through their hard work. Learn about the history of Cheaha State Park, the CCC, and so much more on this hike.

Take A Hike: Accessible and Interpretive Discovery Hike

Join Cheaha’s Naturalist, Mandy Pearson, on a hike across the highest mountain in Alabama. Learn about the Cheaha ecosystem, plants, animals, and history on this 0.6-mile hike.
